Trust

The National Motor Museum collects, preserves and presents to its visitors vehicles and other items related to the history of motoring in Great Britain from 1895 to the present day. The Museum also aims to stimulate and participate in research into the history of motoring. These core activities are supported by the Reference, Picture and Film and Video Libraries, whose Collections are not restricted to Great Britain, but span the rest of Europe and, indeed, the world. Educational Services are provided, relevant to the objectives of the National Motor Museum and its Collections.

The Museum has now acquired over 250 vehicles and tens of thousands of objects relating to motoring history. The latter includes car accessories, motoring clothing, printed ephemera and anything else that helps to describe the fascinating evolution of motoring in all its forms and the associated social implications.

Film And Video Library

Film And Video Library

Established in 1979, the library’s mission was to save film, when the motor industry was in recession and archive material was being lost through destruction or neglect. Over the years, the collection has grown enormously through the addition of corporate archives from Ford, Vauxhall, Rootes, Peugeot Talbot, Dunlop, the Metropolitan Police, Automobile Association and Royal Automobile Club. Private collections have also been acquired, along with a considerable amount of motorsport material.

Shell Art Collection

Shell Art Collection

One of the most extraordinary collections of commercial art in Britain, it is housed at the Library of Motoring and managed for Shell UK Ltd. The collection spans the period from the 1920's to the 1960's with most of the posters having been produced during the 1930's. The collection also contains many wonderful humorous press advertisements of the 1920's and postcards pre-dating the First World War. Generations of schoolchildren grew up with ' Shell Guides to Nature ' on their classroom walls, all painted by Shell artists.

High Days & Holidays

High Days & Holidays travels in time and place, from Victorians enjoying a day at the seaside to Mods & Rockers, and far off holidays to more familiar locations. It illustrates some of the many ways in which motoring has enabled us to make more of our leisure time, opening up the countryside and helping us enjoy hobbies and holiday pursuits such as a day at the motor races, touring, camping & caravanning. A range of loan boxes related to the exhibition storylines introduce a hands-on element to educational activities.

High Days & Holidays provides a rare glimpse of The National Motor Museum's multi-faceted, internationally significant collections of photographs, archives, library material and objects. For further information about High Days and Holidays email hdh@beaulieu.co.uk or telephone 01590 614673.
